Inspirat din cartea omonimă a reputatului istoric de artă Michael Francis Gibson, filmul plasează povestea Patimilor lui Hristos în Flandra anului 1564, chiar anul în care Bruegel şi-a realizat capodopera. Din cele peste 500 de figuri din tablou, Gibson şi Majewski au creat zece personaje ale căror destine se împletesc. Mai mulţi specialişti în grafică pe computer au recreat, cu efecte remarcabile, peisajele din pânzele lui Bruegel.
